After the merger, Bears finished the 1970 season in the final position in their division, a repetition of their position in the 1969 season. In 1975, Bears outlined Walter Payton from Jackson State University. with their first option. He won the NFL most valuable player award in the 197778 season. Payton will continue to overshadow Jim Brown's NFL career record in 1984 before retiring in 1987, and will keep his mark. until 2002, when the Dallas Cowboys' Emmitt Smith passed it. Payton's career and personality will win the hearts of Bear fans, who call him "Sweetness". He died of a rare form of liver cancer in 1999 at the age of 45.
